Today's changes: July 28, 2010

That was a jumbo release... Here's just a quick overview. We will publish detailed posts over the next days to highlight some of the mentioned features:

Link to any set and generate a guestpass to share with friends only

You collected a number of private items and want to share them with some friends only? Create a guestpass link to this set.

Share (RSS) Feeds of private sets or integrate them in your Intranet

Say you do a bit of competitor watch and want to share your research findings with colleagues in your company. Simply create a private feed and integrate this in your Intranet Feed Reader.

"Copy to Word" for items

A simple click on this button and the item is copied to your clipboard. A simple click say in Word (for the matter: This also works for any other application with clipboard access such as Powerpoint, Excel) and your item is added to your document.

French and Japanese versions

Finally we added the third official language of Switzerland French (the fourth - Rumantsch - still to go; we're looking for volunteers).

And for our friends in Japan we have a little gift, too: A Japanese version.

Extensions

For the Chrome and Firefox Browser you may now download native Browser extension. Safari and Internet Explorer will follow shortly.

Invite any number of friends with great looking introductory email

You want to share research findings with friends and colleagues and they don't have an account yet? Invite-A-Friend and anyone accepting your invitation is added to your friends' list.

As usual a ton of improvements and bug fixes, this time especially related to the group functionality and the bookmarklet.

Today's changes: July 13, 2010

Again a release with limited public visibility. The reason: We work on a couple of things under the hood. Nevertheless a number of improvements are visible:

  • Improved bookmarklet design including fixes for many capturing issues
  • Compose" in a group remembers that context and saves the new Item directly in that group.
  • Memonic for Windows:
    • If you create a new item, a tiny url is placed into your clipboard for easy sharing.
    • Upload attachments with your items.

As always more details in our release notes. And as always we cherish feedback!

Memonic gets ligher and brighter (... and Chinese)

New Memonic DesignAt Memonic we release new versions every two weeks. Usually we release smaller incremental changes that you as a user might not even notice. Not so this time. Since today the Memonic Collection has a new look & feel.

New design

We've been working behind the scenes with Rahel Vils from virtually handmade to create a lighter and more pleasing user experience. We hope you like it as much as we do.

Group improvements

Memonic in ChineseBut there is more. Two weeks ago we introduced Memonic Groups, a great way to share and collect items with your friends and co-workers. With this release we've added a lot of needed polish to the groups. For example you can now edit the Items of other group members. We're exited that Memonic is slowly becoming a collaborative platform.

Chinese

We've also released the Chinese Version of Memonic today. 欢迎!

There is a lot more. Please consult our release notes for details.

Work together on Memonic with Groups

A Python group on MemonicWe just released the new private groups feature. With this, Memonic is now a great tool for several people to work together on web research and knowledge gathering.

After creating a group you can invite your friends to the group. All the group members can then add Items to the group and see everything in it. The group will appear in the collection of each member under "Your groups".

This feature makes Memonic interesting for a lot more use cases. Some examples:

  • If your job is to collect press clippings about your company, why not open a Memonic group? You can then invite your coworker to the group and they will be able to see what's being written about your company and also add their own clippings.
  • Here at Memonic the developers already have a Python group where we share interesting information about this programming language.
  • Open a group with your spouse to brainstorm travel destinations for your next vacation.

The group feature currently still has some rough edges. We will improve this in the coming releases. Also groups will soon be available in the iOS clients and Memonic for Windows. We are also happy to receive your feedback about what is missing in your opinion.

Memonic iPad App released

Today an upgrade of our iPhone Application made it into the App Store. The change is hardly recognizable on the iPhone but still opens the world of Memonic to a brand new device: the iPad.

We redesigned the iPhone application to become a "Universal Application". That means that both - the iPhone and iPad apps - are bundled into one download that can be installed on both type of devices. When you run the universal application on your iPhone, you will see the small-screen optimized version as we had it before, but when you run the app on your iPad, you'll see the larger, iPad-only version. And it's not just a blown up, oversized iPhone app. It is made specifically for the iPad and takes advantage of the additional screen space.

The Memonic iPhone/iPad application is a perfect companion for our webservice when you are on the move. Simply synchronize all your Items and Sets to your mobilde device and look at them where-ever you are. Even when you are not connected to the internet. Furthermore it allows you to quickly create notes or save pictures to Memonic.

Try it out and let us know what you think. We welcome your feedback.

  • Improved wording on some sections plus making the settings of the bookmarklet more persistent

Today's changes: May 11, 2010

While two releases ago the spotlight was on friends and profiles, this release is on adding comments and a change in the permission policy:

300

Comments

You may add comments to any item, be it yours, your friends' or a public items. A great way to discuss your research results with your colleagues or friends.

Permissions

You may now decide for each item whether only you, your friends or the public may access the item. This implies also a change of the permission policy as outlined in this separate post

As always all the release notes here plus we greatly appreciate your feedback.

Update: Item permissions are handled more restrictively

After serious reflection and discussions with users we decided to change the way of who is allowed to see Items in your public Sets. However, in contrast to well known social networks our privacy rules are not loosened. They are getting stricter instead - for giving you more safety that you're not publishing information that you wanted to be kept secret.

Question: What has changed?
Answer: Until today, all of the items in your public Sets have been made public as well - and therefore been visible for everyone. From today on, you have to decide for each Item whether you want to have it visible for your eyes only (default), for anyone (public) or for your friends. When moving a private Item into a public Set - for example by mistake - it will still be kept private.

Q: How can I share Items with other people?
A: Sharing Items with other people is still possible. Just click on the "Permissions" menu for seeing your options. Select one of "private", "public" or "friends".

Q: How do I see if I have public Sets?
A: Click on "Manage" on the side of your Sets list for opening the Sets management view. The color code on the right tells you who is able to see the Set. If the icon is green, the Set is public. Yellow indicates that your friends can see the Set. And finally, red Sets are only visible by you.

Q: What do other users see if I make a Set public?
A: With today's change, there is no effect on the Items inside a Set anymore if you make a Set public. What still happens is that public Sets are listed in your collection and can be seen by any user (Example). Use this if you want your data to become discoverable and browsable.

Q: I want to share all my Items with everyone and do not feel like changing the permission level every time. How do I do that?
A: If you use the bookmarklet for saving items, your settings (selected Set and permission level) will be remembered for further use.

Q: Why are you doing this?
A: Each Memonic user shall decide which of her/his Items are shared and which ones are not. The previous implementation left room for unintended publication, for example by simply moving an Item into a wrong Set. As we are respecting the user's privacy are constantly trying to eliminate side-effects that could lead to private data being published by mistake.

We hope that you agree with our decision and continue to use Memonic and keep the essential of the Web - for yourself, your friends or everyone.

Memonic 한국을 환영합니다

We are proud to announce that Memonic is now also available in Korean. A big 'thank you' goes to Hyon Joo and Sushi who made this possible in many hours of volunteer work.

Memonic is currently available in English, German, Spanish, Italian and Korean. And our community of translators is already working on quite a few other languages. Then we believe Memonic should be easy accessible to as many people as possible. But to achieve this we need your help.

And helping us is straight forward. We set up a simple web-based tool called pootle that allows you to translate Memonic into your language. The tool simply presents you the english version of a paragraph or text snippet and gives you the possibility to add (or correct) the translation. It allows you to translate as little or as much as you like, there is no commitment and no minimum. We appreciate any help.

If you are interested in translating Memonic or improve an existing translation, just send us an email to comment[at]memonic.com and we are more than happy to provide you with your personal access information to our translation tool.

정말 감사합니다
