Memonic takes the next step: Squirro Scores Seed Funding

Today is an important moment for Memonic: we take the next step and go from “keeping the essential” to “harvesting the essential”.

It is the next logical setup for us. Memonic is a great note taking application solving the everyday problem of keeping digital content. With Squirro we want to solve the problem of information overload and clutter: We aim at building something like a noise-cancelling headset; call it digital noise reduction.

To get this done we partner with a group of key business angels from Europe and the Americas to plug their experience in building great software companies.

You may want to read our press release here (PDF, 68KB).

What does this imply for Memonic? We continue to support Memonic as is, including bug fixing and improvements and new features, such as Memonic for Salesforce. We also will allow all existing Memonic users to get Squirro first, as soon as it becomes available. We think this is a good way forward for you, our cherished users and us, the team behind Memonic.

Social media done right

Whenever you read any news about Memonic on Twitter, on Facebook – and oftentimes on our blog as well – it’s mainly me writing and chatting with you. I am the one who is in charge of social media, so my official job title is Social Media Community Manager. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? While I was originally hired as a trainee with very little experience on social media from a company’s perspective, I quickly evolved and learned how things work and what’s key.

Social media isn’t that new. Roots go back to Friendster and even earlier platforms, which mark the beginning of Web 2.0. But since then it changed quite a bit – and social media today is totally different from how communication was done in the past. Due to its dynamic nature there’s a lot of writing going on in this area. There’s at least a bazillion of websites, blogs and magazines dedicated to this subject. So a lot to read for me, right?

Well, indeed. Starting as a newbie in this fascinating and rapidly changing world of Web 2.0 and social networks (at least from a company perspective), there were quite a few articles that helped me to get started. Over time, I acquired considerable knowledge. But of course, compared to the amount of information available, my knowledge still only accounts for 0.0001% or so. Soon I realized that there was no secret recipe. Every company, every market and even every customer is different. One of the strengths of social media communication is that you really are able to build a personal relationship and communicate on an individual basis. And that’s truly valuable.

But how do you really do social marketing right? As I earlier stated, there’s no such thing as a secret recipe. Over time, “try and error” methodology became increasingly important part of my business. What sounds stupid at first is one of the core elements of lean start up management (which I will go into in a later post, by the way). Lean management not only can be applied to manufacturing or management, it suits marketing very well – especially for start ups (but not limited to!).

Let’s assume you do a blog post. Initially, it’s all based on assumptions. And even though you may have some indications, they remain assumptions until proven. You assume that your audience wants to read about what you’ve got to tell. You assume, that the point of time you post is just the best and that the frequency is just right. You assume that your post has the optimal length and the right tone. And there are plenty of other assumptions.
Even though there are numerous recommendations in online literature on how to do things the right way, this does not necessarily apply to you! All you can do is – right – try and fail. And learn. Go, post, measure and learn. Let me explain this step by step. Based on my outline above, you’ll probably set up your first few posts on assumptions. Now it’s time to test them! If numbers don’t rocket (and even if they do – they could probably do better!), change one variable at the time and so iterate your strategy. Begin with low hanging fruits like changing time of posting, and over time advance towards content. Closely monitor your stats and carefully observe how they change. If they’re going up right, you’re succeeding. If they’re stagnant, pivot. Tweak until you’ve optimised every single aspect of your communication. If you don’t want to rely only on metrics, talk to your counterparts, the ones that are your intended communication recipients. This will help you gain qualitative feedback additionally to the quantitative numbers.

All the above does of course not only apply to blogging, or social media over all, but also to any kind of communication. Communicate – measure – learn. That’s the essence of lean communication. Personally, I don’t think I have come nearly close to the optimum yet. It’s an ongoing process and challenge and I am still tweaking. So let’s see how I’m doing with this post. ;-)

Put the Web into Salesforce: Memonic for Salesforce

Finally it’s officially here, our latest baby: Memonic for Salesforce. The idea is simple: Combine the best of both.

Salesforce is a great tool for structured sales automation, yet it’s pretty difficult to add that client research to your lead or account record. Memonic is great note-taking application, and pretty good at exactly that: note taking and web clipping.

With the combination of both worlds you can now literally ‘Put the Web into Salesforce’.

Neat idea right? Salesforce thought so, too and voted us Runner-Up Best Cloud App 2011 at this year’s Dreamforce conference in San Francisco.

Find out all about this on our dedicated website Memonic for Salesforce, or even better test drive it on Salesforce’s AppExchange or read today’s press release.

Memonic For Business

It’s fascinating to learn where and when our users use Memonic in their lives. Some use it merely in a private environment, e.g. to plan trips or gather new receipts, while others count on Memonic during studies at college or university to research for papers. Lastly, the usage of Memonic in an explicit business context is massively growing – and we want to accommodate to that trend.

Memonic in a business context can help you curate the information flow around your business and keep it stored centrally. It can support you in sales, so you can gather client information and have it at your hand when you need it. Furthermore it integrates in various systems that are being used worldwide, such as Wikis, CRMs and more.

Using Memonic you can easily work in a team. Clip, organize and share your notes among your peers. The dashboard will provide you with an overview of what’s going on at the moment and what’s trending.
